DJ Jake Tarry chooses Pluggerz earplugs

21 Jul 2021

From over 300 shows to zero. Just like his colleagues, Jake Tarry has also been stuck at home since March 15th, 2020. All while the year looked so promising! In December of 2019 he signed with Spinnin’ Records, one of the most important record labels in dance music.

He was ready to work on his sound, get new music out and play sets all over the world. All with his new Pluggerz Music Custom-Fit earplugs. We would have loved to hear what he thinks about his new earplugs, but that is currently not in the cards. We’re also eager to hear his opinion on earplugs and how he passes the current time, so we asked him about it!

DJ in quarantine

Instead of going full out in the 300+ shows he normally does annually, Jake is stuck at his home in Amsterdam since March 15th, 2020. His other activities and interests, like his part in a Club, the DJ academy, his events business and ticketing job, are not relevant during Covid. Jake: “I am mainly creating new music, I have plenty of time for that. It is different, since I don’t have a live audience to play it for. I’m not making my music for clubs at the moment, but for radio and streaming services. Without the inspiration I get from the energy of the crowd, it is more difficult to do, since I always make music from emotion.” And what is the first thing you’d like to do after a long time without shows? “As soon as it’s possible, I hope to travel to Miami to play a set as part of Spinnin’ records”, Jake says. “But I’m content with everything as long as I can play music for crowds again!” Luckily, the end of Covid seems to get near and there’s some great festivals being scheduled.

Hearing damage with DJs

A lot of people in the music industry view hearing damage as part of their jobs. It is know that a lot of DJs also suffer from hearing damage, while your ability to hear deteriorates. How is that for Jake? “Since I cannot perform it has become more quiet around me. After three months of silence I suddenly noticed I had a steady ringing in my ears; a light case of tinnitus! I have unknowingly suffered hearing damage and promised myself that I would always wear earplugs to prevent it from getting worse. I don’t do shows with headphones, but with the sound from my monitors. This means the quality of the earplugs has to be superior, with the right filter, so I can hear everything I want to hear in great quality.”

Pluggerz Custom-Fit hearing protection

Jake has chosen to wear Pluggerz Music Premium (DM) earplugs to protect his hearing. How did he reach this decision? Jake laughs: “Sometimes you need a little push in the right direction!

Jake heeft nu gekozen voor op maat gemaakte Pluggerz Music Premium (DM) Earplugs om zijn gehoor te beschermen. Hoe is hij tot die keuze gekomen? Jake lacht: ”Soms heb je even een zetje nodig! My mother insisted on me getting earplugs eight years ago. Unfortunately the sound quality from these earplugs was below par and they didn’t fit too comfortably. It’s easy to leave them out if that happens. Now that I experience the consequences of not wearing earplugs myself, I take protection a lot more seriously. The most important thing for me is that the earplugs are of great quality, fit comfortably and that I’m able to filter sound to my needs. Pluggerz fit all these requirements. I can’t wait to try them out during a show.”

Wear them!

Not only the professionals in the music industry, but also all visitors are at risk of hearing damage through loud music. What would you like to say to your audience to prevent this? “I can keep it short”, says Jake, “wear them! The sound quality doesn’t get less when wearing earplugs with a special music filter, your experience stays the same and you will save yourself a lot of misery in the long term.”
